Alliance: Creative District investment attracts visitors and retains residents in the panhandle

For Nebraska communities, a Creative District designation and grant investment can increase economic outcomes and quality of life. 

When Alliance was designated a Nebraska Creative District in 2024, the community embraced arts, humanities and local collaboration as tools to strengthen its downtown, grow tourism and enhance quality of life.

The Carhenge Mural Festival brought eight international artists to paint murals at the iconic Carhenge site and throughout downtown, alongside painted crosswalks and other public art installations. The colorful additions have created new energy while helping residents see their community in a new light.

Creative investment is also supporting Alliance’s local economy. With more than 100,000 people visiting Carhenge each year, the Creative District is encouraging visitors to spend more time downtown through mural walks, vendor markets, artist events and local businesses. These efforts are generating new opportunities for artists, entrepreneurs and the broader community.

One local leader shared, “Tourism is what we’re going to see first. So, this is a gateway. It’s awesome in the aspect of art, but it also makes sense from a business and economic standpoint, driving traffic back into the community.”

Beyond tourism, Alliance’s arts and humanities organizations continue to provide meaningful opportunities for people of all ages. Through arts education, public art and local history programs, residents can build skills, express themselves and strengthen connections to their community.

The Alliance Creative District demonstrates how investing in arts and culture can strengthen local economies, create vibrant public spaces and improve quality of life in Nebraska communities. Funding for Creative District grants is provided by the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.
