Lincoln: Veterans and active-duty military personnel gather to reflect and write through this Humanities Nebraska program
For veterans and active-duty military personnel, writing can become a path to connection and reflection. Nebraska Warrior Writers is a program of Humanities Nebraska in partnership with the Nebraska Writing Project and the Veterans Administration that has helped veterans and active-duty military personnel strengthen their writing and share their stories for more than a decade.
Led by professional writing instructors, the workshops include six to eight biweekly sessions focused on developing writing skills, from generating ideas and revising drafts to preparing work for publication.
Participants read and discuss fiction, poetry and memoir alongside their own writing, receiving thoughtful feedback while building confidence in their craft. Along the way, they form meaningful connections with one another, culminating in an optional public reading.
One participant shared, “I’ve gained confidence in my writing abilities and found a safe space for sharing my thoughts.”
The workshops welcome participants interested in any form of writing, and no previous writing experience is required.
Beyond strengthening writing skills, 98% of participants agree the workshops encourage them to reflect on and discuss important themes related to their military experiences and personal writing.
Thanks in part to funding from Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, Nebraska Warrior Writers remains free for veterans and active-duty military personnel.
